TSL034 (Fundamentals of Listening & Speaking)

ASSIGNMENTS & ASESSMENTS

TedTalk & Impromptu Video Submission

This video was the first task for this subject. To be honest, I started laughing after re-watching this video. I feel that I have improved a lot after this video.

I distinctly remember filming it at 3:00 a.m. My brain was barely functioning.

We were asked to analyze a TedTalk and present a speech for it. In the same video, we also were to give an impromptu speech. We were given a few topic to choose from:

1. Grown ups are weird species.

2. You are not weird; you are just a limited edition.

3. If I were an animal I'd be a...

4. In what situation is lying a good idea?

5. If I ruled the world...

6. Disney movies are great until they all start singing

8. Before Twitter I had a life.

9. Totally useless professions.

10. Five requirements to be called a bestie by girlfriends.

I chose number 2 because I loved the sentiment of the topic.

Speaking & Listening Test

For the Mid Terms, we had a Speaking and Listening Test. For the Speaking Test, we were put in teams of four. I was placed in a team with Erin, Aniq and Aazeem. I think we had a great time during the test because we were given a topic we could relate to.

The topic was, 'What is the most important thing in making a successful group project?' For Task A, I presented the point, time management. For Task B, we had a very fruitful conversation, coming to the conclusion that a good leader is the most important thing in making a successful group project.

The Listening test required us to pay attention to the audio being played and write down the correct answers.

Demonstrative Speech

We were asked to submit an outline and a video for our Demonstration Speech.

This assignment taught me a lot on how to get the attention of an audience and demonstrate a process to them effectively. The topic of my speech is: Painting a Landscape Painting Made Easy!

NOTES

This chart was given to us by Miss Hannan and personally, it has really helped me a lot in memorizing the different phonetics and sounds.

Speaking Test Notes

I made these notes in preparation for the Speaking Test. They also came in very handy for the MUET Speaking Test.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

All in all, I had a really great time learning L&S. This subject has made me more eloquent and confident in my speaking. On top of that, studying different topics like phonetics and stress words were exciting as they were something very new to me. I had fun making all the videos and writing the speeches. .

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most of our classes were done online. However, we did have a few chances of having face-to-face L&S classes. They were always so much fun and much more engaging that Google Meet or Zoom. IT gave my classmates and I at least, the slightest bit of insight into how university was like before 2020. I particularly enjoyed the group discussion we had in the computer lab and the class where we had to voice out each sound in the Phonemic Chart.

The effectiveness and enjoyability of this class had a lot to with our lecturer. Miss Hannan. Miss Hannan has the sweetest, most cheerful disposition. Her smile and laugh never fails to brighten up my day. Whether it be on Zoom or in life, she never fails to make classes fun and interactive. She is always there to lend a helping hand my classmates and I have confusions about a certain topic. She is also super encouraging and always hopes for the best of her students. Thank you so much, Miss!

All in all, I have really learned a lot and I am more than happy to continue this course in Semester 2.
