TSL014 (Fundamentals of Academic Reading)
ASSIGNMENTS & ASESSMENTS
Journal 1
A lot of people complained about writing journals for this subject. However, as peculiar as it may sound, I was actually looking forward for this assignment. I love reading and analyzing articles, especially those that challenge my views. Clearly, Journal 1 and Journal 2 were definitely right up my alley.

We were given the article, Time to fix American Education with Race-for-space Resolve by Rubén Rodriguez. The article was about the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on education in the United States.

It was really interesting to research and write on how education in Malaysia has been affected by the pandemic. It was very eye opening.

Alhamdulillah, I got 9/10 marks and it was a huge achievement for me.

Journal 2
For our 2nd Journal, we were asked to write a journal based on the article, Ideal Individualism and the Benefits of Conformity.

I found this article very interesting. I had a lot of fun really delving deep into the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. It was an eye-opening topic because I never really a solid opinion on the matter before.

This assignment gave me an opportunity to read what other people had to say about the subject, allowing me to cultivate a more in-depth view of individualism and its benefits or dangers to society.

Mid-Term Asessment

In my opinion, the Mid-Term Paper for Reading was one of the most difficult papers we had to take. I felt like I was running out of time and panicked a lot while answering the questions. On top of that, I also made the careless mistake of not justifying some of my answers due to not reading the questions properly.

However, there were a lot of question I did feel confident answering like questions on suffixes and prefixes so I should give myself at least a little credit.

I am quite proud of the marks I received but I do think I could have done better.
Insya-Allah, I will work harder for finals.
NOTES
These are my lecture notes for Academic Reading. During class, I find it a huge nuisance to fuss over writing notes. To make sure I can focus in the class while taking my lecturer notes, I'll make sure I have two pens at the ready, one black and one blue.
After class, the first thing I'll do, is skim through my notes and highlight keywords with different colours. I've always liked art and colourful things so doing this instantly makes my notes more interesting to me, so I don't get bored too fast when revising my notes.

At first, I found Contextual Clues hard to understand but after making these notes, I got a cleare picture of the topic.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
Personally, reading is one of the best subjects. I really enjoyed the classes that we had because they were super fun. Particularly, I most enjoyed the classes where we dissected movies, especially my favourite musical, Hamilton!

Our first class started off with a game. We played 2 Truths and 1 Lie. We had so much and it was a great way to know my lecturer, Sir Afiq and classmates better. Another class that stand out to me was when we watched the movie, Laskar Pelangi and had a very fruitful discussion about the importance of education and education for underprivileged students.

My favourite parts of the syllabus was when learned about dictionary skills when we studied suffixes and prefixes. The topics were very interesting and enlightening. At first, I had a hard time understanding how to find the Topic and Implied Main Sentence of a paragraph. However, with the help of Sir Afiq and my classmates, I slowly got a grasp of the topic.

To put it simply, Sir Afiq is an amazing lecturer. He never fails to make classes fun. He is also super funny. Whenever he had discussions, Sir was always interested and open to what we had to say. He also makes classes very interactive which I really enjoy. After learning each topic, Sir will ask us questions on the topic. In my opinion, this is great because it helped me ensure that I truly understood the topic. Whenever we have questions, Sir is always there to answer, whether during class or after class through Whatsapp. I am wholeheartedly so grateful to have been assigned such a wonderful lecturer. Thank you for everything, Sir!

Overall, I really enjoyed studying Academic Reading. I learned a lot of new things while having a lot of fun.
