On the 29th of August 2020, UiTM Dengkil sent 4 teams with 2 debaters each and 2 adjudicators to represent the institution for Monash Debate Open 2020. The competition was held for 2 days, from the 29th to the 30th of August 2020. I was in the second team, Asasi UITM B, partnered up with my bestie, Jo! Akif and Adam were in Asasi UiTM A, Shareef and Aizat were in Asasi UiTM C while Velleny and Hera ere in Asasi UiTM D. Cloey and Irfan joines as adjudicators. We trained for a few weeks under the guidance of our trainer, Aidil.
On the first day, the teams chose to stay in their own rooms for comfort and to get good internet connection. They were told to join the Discord channel as all of the announcements, tabbing, The debate was held on Zoom. The first motion was This House Would Ban The Use of Fully Autonomous Weapons in Warfare. Asasi UiTM A,B and D were ranked 3rd while Asasi UiTM C was ranked 4th. The round ended around 12:50 pm.
Round 2 started at 1:20 pm. Asasi UiTM B was assigned as Closing Government. Unfortunately, for this round, Asasi UiTM A,B,C and D ranked 4th place. Round 3 started as soon as everyone got their feedback from their adjudicators. The motion for this round was This House Prefers A World Where People Cannot Lie. We were against very experienced debaters. Unfortunately, for this round we got 4th place.
Last round of the day, started around 6:00 pm. THBT Joe Biden should have picked Elizabeth Warren as the Democratic Party's Vice Presidential candidate. I was very excited about this motion considering the fact that I've been keeping up with American Politics. Jo and I were assigned as Closing Opposition. I am more than happy to report that we won first place!
Alhamdulillah, I ranked 38th as a Novice Speaker. Considering that this was my first international and inter-varsity Debate Opens, I am immensely proud of myself. This experience, frst and foremost was an amazing to learn and familiarize myself with the British Parliamentary debate format and get to know new people!
